Te Arai is a highly modified landscape having a history of land use that spans over eight centuries. Burn offs, bush clearings, draining of swamps, gum digging and the plantation of pine forest have created a landscape radically different to its natural state, though pockets of biodiversity still remain and serve as an invaluable resource for restoring ecosystems.
