New Zealand has approximately 60 species of amphibians and
reptiles, with lizards (39 species) forming the largest single group. The
lizard fauna is remarkable for its diversity in view of New Zealand's
isolation, relatively small land mass and temperate climate. The
distinctiveness of the herpetofauna has long been underestimated,
with scientific emphasis being devoted largely to the endemic frogs
(Leiopelmatidae) and the tuatara (Sphenodontidae).
